Later that afternoon, Matt had needed to cut short his volunteer time with the EMS station in order to prepare for his two ski runs in the Open division. He’d promised the EMS supervisor that he’d volunteer for two hours tomorrow after he finished riding for Dakota in their match in the Sport division.

He’d missed Dakota’s ski run with Jeff but heard he gave her an awesome 15.01 second ride. She was sitting in first place for skiing in the Sport division for today. He had no doubt she was destined to win multiple top prizes this weekend—in both divisions. Unbelievable talent!

In his first ski run half an hour ago, his rider and horse, both new to the Leadville event, had pulled Matt through the track at a breakneck speed despite the jumps being a lot higher than in the Sport division. Matt executed a flawless and competition-stealing run through the professional course landing him in first place for now.

There were just two teams separating him from his next run with Dakota. There weren’t as many running in the Open division, so his chances of holding onto that lead were good. Dakota came up to him leading Twinkle.

“She’s so excited to race again. I hope you’re ready for a fast run, Matteo.”

“You know it. Comet and Twinkle love the sport, and Van Gogh sure has taken to it too.”

Matt gave Dakota a quick kiss before patting Twinkle’s neck. “You two go just as fast as you can,” he told them. “I’ll keep up.”

Their names were called, and she got into the saddle and rode to the starting area. After they had gotten the rope situated and taken their places, the announcer gave them the go-ahead and with Matteo’s nod, Dakota spurred Twinkle who streaked onto the track. Given how hard the rope yanked his arm, Matt could tell this would be a great run.

He navigated the three alternating jumps and gates grabbing every single ring, until she catapulted him across the finish line for his new personal best time—14.95 seconds.

Damn, his cowgirl could ride!

Dakota ran up to him after dismounting, pulling Twinkle with her. “That was awesome! We flew down the track!”

“Sure did. You and Twinkle were great!”

“And you anticipated every move and jump so well! We make a great team!”

“You said it!”

After a quick kiss, Dakota headed off to cool Twinkle down but said she’d rejoin him soon.

Tony clapped him on the back. “Not bad for an old man.”

“Watch the old man jokes, little brother.” Rafe glared at Tony before turning to Matt and smiling, lowering his voice so only the two of them could hear. “Your cowgirl sure did give your sorry ass a ride for the money today.”

Matt heard the innuendo in Rafe’s remark but ignored both his brothers’ teasing. His heart raced from the exhilaration of competing with Dakota again.

“Great run, Matteo,” Mama said as she gave him a hug and a peck on the cheek. “I’m so proud of you.”

“Impressive run, Matt.” Paul extended his hand to congratulate him.
